Description

Authentic German Frikadellen are traditional pan-fried meat patties made from a blend of ground beef and pork, infused with onions, garlic, and herbs. These flavorful patties are perfect as a main course and can be served hot with mustard, potato salad, or crusty bread, or cold in sandwiches.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat Mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon dried marjoram or parsley
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

For Frying

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter

Instructions

  1. Soak Breadcrumbs: Place the breadcrumbs in a small bowl and pour the milk over them. Let them soak for about 5 minutes until softened.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, diced onion, minced garlic, soaked breadcrumbs, egg, salt, black pepper, Dijon mustard, dried marjoram or parsley, and fresh parsley. Mix gently until well combined without overmixing.
  3. Form Patties: Shape the mixture into about 8 oval-shaped, slightly flattened patties.
  4. Heat Oil: Heat the vegetable oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  5. Cook Patties: Fry the frikadellen for about 5 to 6 minutes per side until nicely browned on the outside and fully cooked through.
  6. Drain and Serve: Transfer the cooked patties to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil before serving.

Notes

  • Frikadellen are often served with mustard, potato salad, or crusty bread.
  • They can also be enjoyed cold in sandwiches.
  • Refrigerate patties for about 30 minutes before cooking for extra flavor and better shape retention.
