Description

This Biscuits and Gravy Breakfast Casserole is a hearty, comforting dish perfect for a family breakfast or brunch. It combines flaky biscuit dough, savory sausage gravy, and fluffy eggs baked together to create a deliciously satisfying meal. Topped with optional cheddar cheese and fresh parsley, this casserole brings classic Southern flavors to your table with ease.

Ingredients

Scale

Biscuit Base

  • 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough

Sausage Gravy

  • 1 lb breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper (or to taste)

Egg Mixture and Toppings

  • 6 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking during baking.
  2. Cut and Layer Biscuits: Cut the refrigerated biscuit dough into quarters. Spread half of these biscuit quarters evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish to form the base layer.
  3. Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage for 6-8 minutes until it is fully browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat from the pan to avoid greasy gravy.
  4. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage in the skillet and stir to coat evenly. Gradually add the whole milk while stirring continuously until the mixture thickens into a smooth gravy. Season with black pepper to taste.
  5. Layer Gravy: Pour half of the prepared sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit layer in the baking dish.
  6. Add Egg Layer: In a separate bowl, whisk the six large eggs until well blended. Pour the eggs evenly over the gravy layer in the baking dish.
  7. Top with Remaining Biscuits and Gravy: Arrange the remaining biscuit quarters on top of the eggs, then pour the rest of the sausage gravy over the biscuits. If using, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top for extra flavor.
  8. Bake: Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the biscuits on top appear golden brown and the eggs are set.
  9. Rest and Garnish: Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes after baking. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Serve warm for a delicious breakfast experience.

Notes

  • You can substitute whole milk with 2% milk for a lighter version, but whole milk provides a richer gravy.
  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the gravy.
  • Cheddar cheese is optional but adds a nice creaminess and depth of flavor.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated for a quick breakfast next day.
  • Ensure biscuits are cut evenly for uniform cooking.
