Description

These crispy homemade wontons are a delightful appetizer featuring savory ground meat filling wrapped in delicate wonton wrappers and deep-fried to golden perfection. Perfectly seasoned with ginger, garlic, and sesame oil, they offer a crunchy exterior and juicy interior, ideal for serving with your favorite dipping sauces.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1/2 lb ground meat (your choice)
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped water chestnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper

Wontons & Frying

  • 30 wonton wrappers
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Water for sealing wonton edges

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the ground meat, finely chopped green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated fresh ginger, minced garlic, chopped water chestnuts (if using), salt, and white pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. Fill the wontons: Place one wonton wrapper flat on a clean surface. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of the prepared filling into the center of the wrapper.
  3. Seal the wontons: Moisten the edges of the wrapper with a little water. Fold the wrapper diagonally to form a triangle, pressing out any air pockets inside. Press the edges firmly to seal. To achieve a traditional wonton shape, bring the two opposite corners of the triangle together and seal them with a bit more water.
  4. Heat the oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep pan or wok and heat it to 350°F (175°C). This temperature is ideal for deep-frying wontons to ensure they cook quickly and become crispy.
  5. Fry the wontons: Carefully place the wontons into the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes, turning occasionally, until they turn golden brown and crisp on all sides. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil.
  6. Drain and serve: Drain the fried wontons on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve them hot with soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, or your favorite dipping sauces for maximum flavor.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute the ground meat with finely chopped mushrooms or tofu.
  • Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature (350°F) to avoid greasy wontons.
  • Do not overfill the wontons to prevent them from bursting during frying.
  • Wontons are best served fresh and crispy immediately after frying.
  • You can freeze uncooked wontons on a baking sheet and then store them in a sealed bag; fry directly from frozen, adding extra cooking time.
