Ingredients
Scale
Meatballs
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 large egg
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Sauce & Assembly
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 4 sub rolls
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Meatball Mixture: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined, taking care not to overwork the meat to keep the meatballs tender.
- Form Meatballs: Shape the mixture into 12-14 evenly sized meatballs to ensure uniform cooking.
- Brown the Meatballs: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook, turning occasionally, until they are browned on all sides, about 5-6 minutes. This step adds flavor and helps keep them intact during baking.
- Bake Meatballs in Sauce: Transfer the browned meatballs to a baking dish and pour marinara sauce over them. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 15-20 minutes until fully cooked through.
- Assemble Subs: Slice the sub rolls lengthwise. Place 3-4 meatballs in each roll. Spoon extra marinara sauce over the meatballs to keep them moist and flavorful.
- Add Cheese and Broil: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese generously over the meatballs and rolls. Place the assembled subs under the broiler for 2-3 minutes until the cheese melts and turns bubbly and slightly golden.
- Garnish and Serve: Optionally, garnish with fresh basil or parsley for a pop of color and fresh herbal aroma. Serve the meatball subs warm for the best taste experience.
Notes
- You can prepare the meatballs ahead of time and refrigerate or freeze them for quick meal assembly later.
- Substitute Italian sausage for the ground pork to add extra flavor and richness to the meatballs.
- Serve with a side of salad or fries for a complete and satisfying meal.
