Ingredients
Scale
Meat Mixture
- 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup frozen peas and carrots
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup water
Topping
- 1 (32-ounce) bag frozen tater tots
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Garnish
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
Instructions
- Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and set aside.
- Cook the Meat and Vegetables: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or ground turkey along with the finely chopped onion. Cook until the meat is browned and the onion becomes soft, about 5 to 7 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking.
- Add Garlic and Spices: Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for another minute until fragrant. Then stir in the frozen peas and carrots along with ground cumin, ground coriander, turmeric, garam masala, optional cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. These spices give the filling its signature Indian-inspired flavor.
- Simmer with Tomato Sauce: Pour in the tomato sauce and water, mixing thoroughly. Allow the mixture to simmer for 5 minutes until it thickens slightly, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Assemble the Casserole: Transfer the cooked meat and vegetable mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish. Then arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the top, covering the entire surface.
- Bake the Casserole: Place the baking dish uncovered into the preheated oven. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until the tater tots turn golden brown and become crispy.
- Add Cheese and Finish Baking: Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the crispy tater tots. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until the cheese has melted completely.
- Garnish and Serve: Take the casserole out of the oven and garnish with freshly chopped cilantro. Serve warm, optionally accompanied by yogurt or chutney for extra flavor.
Notes
- You can customize this casserole by adding diced potatoes, bell peppers, or corn to the filling for extra texture and flavor.
- For a vegetarian version, replace the ground meat with cooked lentils or chickpeas to maintain protein and texture.
- Serve with a side of yogurt or chutney to complement the Indian spices and add creaminess or tanginess.
