Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
Filling
- 1 cup fresh spinach, chopped
- 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
- 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Egg Wash
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it reaches the proper temperature for baking the pastry twists.
- Sauté Garlic: Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Cook Spinach: Add the chopped fresh spinach to the skillet and cook until wilted, approximately 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
- Prepare Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked spinach, crumbled feta cheese, softened cream cheese, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir thoroughly until well mixed.
- Roll Out Pastry: Unroll the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Spread the spinach and feta mixture evenly over one half of the pastry sheet.
- Fold Pastry: Fold the other half of the pastry over the filling to form a rectangle. Press down the edges firmly to seal the filling inside.
- Cut and Twist: Slice the sealed pastry into 1-inch wide strips. Twist each strip carefully to create spiral shapes.
- Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place the twisted pastries onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them slightly apart.
- Apply Egg Wash: Beat the egg in a small bowl, then brush the beaten egg over the twists for a shiny, golden finish once baked.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the pastry twists are puffed up and beautifully golden brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Make sure the spinach is well drained after cooking to prevent soggy pastry.
- You can substitute cream cheese with ricotta for a slightly different texture.
- For a crispier twist, chill the shaped pastry strips in the fridge for 10 minutes before baking.
- Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
- These twists freeze well before baking; bake directly from frozen, adding a few minutes to the baking time.
