Description

These Spinach and Feta Puff Pastry Twists are a delightful savory snack featuring flaky puff pastry filled with a flavorful mixture of sautéed spinach, creamy feta, and cream cheese. Perfect as an appetizer or party treat, they bake up golden and crispy with a deliciously cheesy and herby filling inside.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)

Filling

  • 1 cup fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it reaches the proper temperature for baking the pastry twists.
  2. Sauté Garlic: Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Cook Spinach: Add the chopped fresh spinach to the skillet and cook until wilted, approximately 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
  4. Prepare Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked spinach, crumbled feta cheese, softened cream cheese, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir thoroughly until well mixed.
  5. Roll Out Pastry: Unroll the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Spread the spinach and feta mixture evenly over one half of the pastry sheet.
  6. Fold Pastry: Fold the other half of the pastry over the filling to form a rectangle. Press down the edges firmly to seal the filling inside.
  7. Cut and Twist: Slice the sealed pastry into 1-inch wide strips. Twist each strip carefully to create spiral shapes.
  8. Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place the twisted pastries onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them slightly apart.
  9. Apply Egg Wash: Beat the egg in a small bowl, then brush the beaten egg over the twists for a shiny, golden finish once baked.
  10. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the pastry twists are puffed up and beautifully golden brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure the spinach is well drained after cooking to prevent soggy pastry.
  • You can substitute cream cheese with ricotta for a slightly different texture.
  • For a crispier twist, chill the shaped pastry strips in the fridge for 10 minutes before baking.
  • Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
  • These twists freeze well before baking; bake directly from frozen, adding a few minutes to the baking time.
