- 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes with juices
- ½ cup tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- ½ teaspoon sugar
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to heat preference)
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
- Cooked white rice for serving
Instructions
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, and celery and cook for 5–7 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, smoked paprika, cayenne, thyme, oregano, Worcestershire sauce, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer.
- Reduce heat to low, cover partially, and simmer for 20–25 minutes to allow flavors to develop, stirring occasionally.
- Add the shrimp to the sauce and simmer for 4–5 minutes, or until the shrimp are pink and fully cooked. Discard bay leaf.
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve hot over cooked white rice and garnish with fresh parsley.
Notes
- For a richer sauce, add a splash of chicken stock or seafood broth during simmering.
- You can make the sauce ahead of time and add the shrimp just before serving.
- Serve with cornbread or crusty bread to soak up the sauce.
