Scale
Sandwich Ingredients
- 4 slices sliced bread (sourdough or brioche recommended)
- 4 slices ham (Black Forest or smoked ham)
- 4 slices Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter (generously spread)
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
- 1 pinch nutmeg (for added flavor)
Topping
- 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (for topping)
Instructions
- Preparation: Start by selecting your favorite sliced bread and lay out the slices on a clean surface to assemble your sandwiches.
- Butter the Bread: Generously spread butter on one side of each bread slice to ensure a crispy golden crust when cooked.
- Assemble the Sandwich: Place a slice of ham on the unbuttered side of half of the bread slices. Optionally, spread Dijon mustard and sprinkle a pinch of nutmeg over the ham for extra flavor. Top the ham with a slice of Gruyère or Swiss cheese.
- Complete the Sandwich: Place the other half of the bread slices on top of the cheese with the buttered side facing outwards, forming sandwiches.
- Cook on Skillet: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Place the sandwiches in the skillet, buttered side down, and cook for about 3-4 minutes until the bread is golden brown and crispy.
- Flip and Cook: Carefully flip the sandwiches using a spatula and cook the other side for another 3-4 minutes, ensuring the cheese melts and the sandwich is crispy on both sides.
- Optional Broil Topping: For an extra touch, transfer the sandwiches to a baking sheet, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top, and broil in the oven for 1-2 minutes until the cheese topping is bubbly and crispy. Remove and serve hot.
Notes
- Use high-quality bread like sourdough or brioche for the best texture and flavor.
- Dijon mustard and nutmeg add subtle complexity but can be omitted if preferred.
- Broiling with Parmesan cheese is optional but adds a delicious crispy cheesy crust.
- Be careful when flipping the sandwiches to keep them intact and evenly cooked.
- Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
